Who would have guessed?

Who would have guessed that

chubby cheeks and

toothless smiles

would be the very light to

disperse

the gloomy clouds

of night?

Who would have guessed that

such a swaddled

bundle would

be the strength

and shield

of nations?

The Key of David,

locking up the ways

death and sin?

What divine foolishness

sends a baby—

softness and sweetness and tiny feet—

to trample a serpent’s head in the dust?
